Primary and Secondary Research

Primary and Secondary Research

Primary research
-We will use Vox pops in the town centre, to show the public’s view on what they believe cause attraction and why they are attracted to certain people, we will interview a variety of people of all age, genders, and sex this will give our documentry a broader audience and get all differnt feedback responces.
-We will interview professionals 'experts' who can tell us the real physiological reason for why we are attracted to people; this makes the documentary factual so there for it is more interesting. We will interview her in a classroom, giving the audience a sence of realism which is very common in documentarys, we will also film her in day time, so it's all natural lightening and sounds. Our proffesional physocologist was dressed in a red outfit this related to the theme of love and attraction as red represents love.
-We will interview many couples, but only select two or three main ones to go on our documentry, we will interview different types and relationship status's of couples; married, divorced, dating, widowed etc, this will give different answers and a different range of answers.
-We will interview our married couple at home, so it looks homely and shows they have a strong bond and strong connection in the home. Younger couples who are dating we will interview in college/school to show that many relationships blossom from a young age and are childhood sweethearts.
-We will use archive footage of familiar programmes that many people will no, this will mae our documentary move varied and add extra information for the audience to engage for.

Secondary research
We will use newspaper articles that we can find on the psychological reasons for attraction. Also we will show articles on this subject. There is a lot of information on the internet about the real reason for attraction. This will help us back up our evidence showing many different professional psychologist views. We will also get Archive footage from places like www.youtube.com and other documentaries that address the real reasons for attraction. We will get many clips from programmes such as Skins, Eastenders, The Inbetweeners, etc which relates to a younger audience which is what our documentry is aimed at These clips will also make it more entertaining and humorous.

We also looked at websites and articals posted on the internet founded by many differnt people, experts and researchers, to find out reasons and laws about attraction. Websites (such as the ones listed below) have been very useful to us in our secondary research, they gave us inspiration, ideas, and knowlege about attraction, helping us come up with ideas and reasons around attraction for our final documentry piece.

Research of the internet (notes):

WHAT IS ATTRACTION?
----No-one knows exactly what causes it, but attraction is the one factor that is make or break in any relationship. It completely overrides your mental check-list for your ideal mate (religion, education…), and it’s certainly not something that can be learned with time.
----Pheromones are chemicals you emit without even knowing – they’re like odourless scents that trigger sexual responses in others. They are probably responsible for attracting the biologically perfect partner for you – signalled by that feeling of sexual attraction. It’s quite literally chemistry!
The sexual area of the brain reacts to these chemicals in quite different ways to ordinary scents. For example, for men, women’s pheromones activate the hypothalamus (the region of the brain that controls sexual behaviour and the hormones), but has no effect on women. Meanwhile, for women, the male chemical stimulates the hypothalamus. And interestingly enough, gay men respond sexually to male pheromones in the same way as women do.
----Genes are also to blame for the seemingly shallow factors that seem to catch the opposite sex’s attention. There’s actually a biological reason why men honestly can’t help being attracted to women with full lips, slim bodies, smooth skin and glossy hair. Men are wired to interpret these as signs of youth and health, which indicates that the woman is a prime baby-making machine.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?
----Some people claim that it happened to them and it was like you raise your head, meet those eyes and tell yourself “It is He/She!”. Psychologists say that love at first sight depends on our psychological state at the moment. In some case we won’t even notice those charming eyes in another they can make a lasting impression on as. Also they say that it takes about 30 seconds to fall in love or precisely speaking to estimate whether the person is worth to fall in love with. By the way psychologists claim that men fall in love first.
----Very many factors act in the situation of falling in love from the first sight. These are our ideals, intuition or “fast logic”, imagination etc. When you fall in love at the first sight you are usually ready and willing to fall in love. Less possibility that it will happen if you are tired, stressed, solving problems in you mind. Of cause the main part in falling in love is given to the appearance, voice, gestures, smell. One person intuitively searches in the other the qualities and the feature to complete him/herself. Of causes beautiful people attract attention the most, but sometimes it’s wrong to fall in love with them easily because those people are experiencing much attention from the people of the other sex all the time and your delightful reaction may simply have no answers.

Physological reasons behind attraction....

‘The psychology of attraction is a very intriguing topic effectively determining the laws of attraction, the rules of getting drawn to certain people, the basis of friendships and also the success of relationships. Attraction is a social, biological and evolutionary process. We are attracted to certain people due to social reasons as we may be able to establish social rapport with such individuals. When there is a reinforcement of positive social responses between certain individuals with repeated interaction, feelings of liking and lust, attraction may develop along with a sense of being comfortable with each other developing a sense of familiarity. However just as a sense of familiarity gives rise to attraction, in some cases strangeness or the urge to know someone can also lead to attraction.’

Body Language
-A woman's body language signals are naturally concerned with displaying her abilities to bear a child. Physically, women normally possess fuller lips, softer skin, thinner eyebrows and the absence of facial hair. Compared to a man, a woman's waist is narrower, her pelvis is broader and her legs are more slender.
-A man's character can be revealed by his preferences in a woman's breasts, her bottom, or legs. It is said that if a man likes a smaller backside he is considered to be intellectual introvert. If however, he is aroused by the sight of large breasts then he is likely to be a sporty extrovert.

Physical Attractiveness
"Beauty is only skin deep." Well, it seems that initially it is more than that. Many studies have led to the idea that physical attractiveness draws people to one another. Although most psychologists agree that physical appearance affects the level of attraction between two people, they are in disagreement with deciding why this is such. Some suggest that people are attracted to a "better-looking" person because being associated with "beautiful" people enhances our social standing and self-esteem. Others suggest that men are attracted to women for biological reasons. That is, men seek women who are physically attractive because those physical qualities seem to be associated with youth and fertility. Regardless of the justifications, it is apparent that physical attractiveness plays a significant role in attraction between people.

Similarity
This idea does not say that soccer players will marry soccer players. Instead, it makes claims that those interested in sports are attracted to those interested in sports. Statistics show that people who pair off do so according to similarities in race, age, religion, education, physical characteristics, and other general characteristics.

Familiarity
One of the major reasons proximity creates liking is that it increases familiarity. Generally speaking, the more a person interacts with another person, the more attraction builds between them.
The closer two people live to each other the more likely it is for them to like one another. Research has shown that the best single predictor of whether two people are friends is how far apart they live. This idea leads into the next one.

Proximity
The closer two people live to each other the more likely it is for them to like one another. Research has shown that the best single predictor of whether two people are friends is how far apart they live. This idea leads into the next one.

Brainstorming of content

Brain-Storm of content for our documentry:

1) In our archive footage: We would like to use quick clips of celebrity programme couples kissing, holiding hands, insinuating they are in love. Such as Skins, eastenders. This will make it more interesting, fun, flirty and cheeky, making it more entertaining but gettin to the direct point of what our documentary is all about.

2) Interviews couples:We want a variety of couples of all different ages, sex's, and relationship status. This makes are show more varied and isn't to a certain stereotype making it more interesting and unusual.

3) Interviews with the 'expert': We would like to use a physcologist, looking very proffesional in a suit or blazor making her/him look proffesional and serious, making the show look good and proffesional, we would like a good mise en scene like a attraction poster, classroom, computer making it look serious and interesting.

4) Cut Aways: we want a variety of different cut a ways to either go over the narrator, go over interviews to make it more enjoyable and entertaing, so the screne is always busy with a variety of differnt things for our audience to look at. In the interviews we want our cut aways to relate to the interview, e.g. pictures of the couples, short cut a ways of them walking, holiding hands, laughing, playing, kissing-so it all relates to the theme Attraction. We would like cut a ways of:
-Couples Kissing
-Old photographs
-Holding hands
-Laughing
-Hugging
-Showing they are having fun and laughing.

Codes and Conventions of Documentarys

Within Documentaries there are always common codes and conventions that are used throughout; from shots, camera angles, techniques, sounds, and lighting etc. People who create/produce documentaries follow these codes and conventions through closely to ensure the best possible outcome.

1) When an interviewee is being interviewed, questions are never heard being asked, the question will begin at the start of their answer ensuring that is sounds proffesional. Their are usually always graphics stating the interviewee's name, sex, status (depending on the type of documentary) and the graphics are simple and plain, so that the audience's main focus is on the people on screen. The main key convention when being interviewed is the angle upon how they are sat, when they are being interviewed they never make eye contact or look at the camera in any way- they are usually possitioned so they are looking towards the oppisite side 1/3 way across from the camera. E.g. if on the right hand side they look left.

2) Natural lighteing is usually used throughout giving the audience a sense of realism and not making it look to cheesey or silly.

3) Archive footage is often used throughout, anchoring meaning to the topic of documentary used, weather it's from another programme or other documentary etc, this shows different sides and materials of the topic and theme. Archive footage is always clear and bold.

4) Vox pops are often used throughout when it's relevant, asking the general public their opinions on the topic of the documentary- making it more entertaining and varies answers.

5) The mise en scene is a key element, and has to be selected right so that the documentary looks like time and effort has gone in and makes it look very proffesional.

6) Experts are used, making it have a serious side to it, so the audience can get correct facts and figures from a proffesional, so that any unanswered or burning questions they want to no about the topic is then answered-and will be 100% true making it proffesional and interesting/educational.

7)Voice overs are used where it is relevant showing the audience that they have knowledge about the topic and explains in detail what the show is about. The choice f voiceover is very important depending on the type of documentary e.g. for a informative, formal, serious topic you may have someone who speaks well spoken in proper english language.

8)A variety of camera angles is used, to make it more interesting and show variety-making it more proffesional.

9) Graphics-Are usually kept simple so that the eye is mainly focused on the shot on the screne. It gives across quick information such as times, names and dates, so it doesnt waste any time.

10) Diagetic (the voice over) and non-diagetc sounds are added, to create effect and realte to the theme of your documentary.

Inital Idea's

Initial Ten Ideas we came up with within our group

1. Drugs and Alcohol; How and why Drugs and Alcohol are affecting young Teenagers. Showing different reasons why this is happening and the impact it is having on society.

8. Why do we have; looking into why we have certain things such as eyebrows, hair and eyelashes.

9. What Happens where we die? Different opinions and beliefs about what happens to us when we die. Discovering the Scientific ways of bringing people back to life in America.

10. Why do some people need more sleep than others. Looking into why do we sleep? Why do some people sleep walk? The dangers of Sleep deprivation?

Three prilimanary Idea's::

-The first idea we took from the Initial Ten Ideas was Contraception and Teenage Pregnancy. We liked this idea because we believed that this would be an excellent target audience for both teenagers and parents. This documentary would be hard hitting showing how teenage pregnancy is on a dramatic increase throughout England. We also thought this documentary had a good source of evidence, facts and figures that have already been published about Contraception and Teenage Pregnancy because it is a popular issue within the media. Also having watch The Sex Education show and how this show was popular throughout Britain, this shows that this topic is a good theme to produce a documentary about. It would also be easy to find people to interview about Contraception due to a number of places around the area we live such as doctors, personal help advisers and many others that would be available for us to interview.

-Secondly we chose to do a documentary about alcohol and the effects of alcohol, we thought this would be a great choice of documentary as most of the people who would be watching are documentary would be teenagers and young adults therefore could realate to this genre, as britian has an extreemly high rate of binge drinking. We would do archive footage of the streets and the effects of people staggering about of a night time getting attacked, raped or even worse. We would interview doctors and hospital surgens seeing how many people come in drunk with drunk realted injuries, we would also speak to the general public asking for their opinion and their views on alcohol and how it effects their lives, this would hopefully encourage and inform people about the dangers of alcohol, and make our target audience of teenagers more aware.

-Finally we picked for the Initial ten ideas was; Why are we Attracted to the people we are? We believed this to be a very interesting subject and relate to almost everybody who is in a relationship or looking for a relationship. We also thought that this idea could lead us onto many other subject matters relating to this such as why the divorce rate is so high, why we marry people who look like our parents and why some people are attracted to the same sex. This idea would enable us to show a documentary that is unusual but interesting.
We dicided between our group that this was the idea that we wanted to use as our final documentry as it was unusual, differernt and would entertain, inform and be enjoyable to watch.
Our documentry would probably be featured on Channel 3 or Channel 4 during the night time about 9'o clock, due to them being very popular channels with a younger audience, and a likely time to show all sorts of bits and bobs as it is past 9 and we could explain our answeres graphically and informally. The documentry would be called 'Why are we attracted to the people that we are?' this question makes a bold statement and leaves the audience woundering and guessing, also it would be used as throughtout the documentry is would answer the question in all sorts of ways.
